For Jerry Erickson, the owner of Coach and Four Barbershop, looking out the window to see a fender bender between haircuts has become somewhat of a weekly routine during the 34 years he's been in business.

According to city traffic data, Erickson's location near the corner of Hill Street and State Street has the 15th highest crash rate of the nearly 1,200 intersections in Ann Arbor.

Wary UI employees voiced their concerns about benefits changes that could cost some thousands of dollars a year at a tense meeting Monday.



At the public forum, many expressed confusion and others shock at the amount their benefits package might decrease under a Funded Retirement Insurance Committee proposal.

Recent LSA graduate Polina Arsentyeva will see an extra $10 in her usual paycheck from Stucchi's after a state-wide minimum wage hike takes effect tomorrow, but Arsentyeva said the few additional dollars won't matter much to her.

"I don't think it's going to make that much of a difference, but maybe I just don't know because I'm not in a situation where I need the money to survive," said Arsentyeva, who has plans to keep scooping ice cream until she starts law school at Loyola University in the fall.

Some Iowa City residents have already noticed a difference in the dining atmosphere as restaurants are now smoke-free under the statewide smoking ban in most public places. Some are happy about the change, some are quitting the habit, and some are crying out at the political injustice of it all.
