Students get opportunity to perform research

Undergraduate students rarely get an opportunity to celebrate their creative endeavors, let alone have their accomplishments presented to the masses. Soon the University of Michigan-Flint, University of Michigan-Dearborn, and Oakland University will offer students an opportunity to do both.
The 11th annual Meeting of Minds Symposium will be held on May 9, and will give undergraduate students a chance to have their work acknowledged and appreciated.
The Meeting of Minds conference gives students an opportunity to work with faculty members to jointly pursue a topic of interest. This allows the students to gain research experience in a comfortable environment. Students can present anything they choose, including research papers, posters, demonstrations, and performances. The works will also be published in a scholarly compilation of presentations from the conference.
The forum also provides students with the opportunity to better understand the research process, and how to apply this process to their own undertakings. Plus, along with presenting their own projects, students will be able explore other fields of interest and see presentations done by students from UM-Dearborn and Oakland University.
A continental breakfast will kick-off the day's events at 8 a.m., and the conference will close with a reception at 4:30 p.m. Student presentations will be given throughout the day, with a break in the middle for a luncheon and student/faculty success stories.
This year the Meeting of Minds will be at the UM-Dearborn, but transportation will be provided from UM-Flint for anyone who wants to attend. Non-presenting students are welcome to join the day's events as well, and can register online at meetingofminds.umflint.edu.
Students interested in taking their work to the next level should bring their ideas to a faculty member or contact the Office of Research at 530 French Hall. Any original idea from any department is acceptable, and the deadline for proposals is Friday, Mar. 14. More information about the conference can be found at www.umd.umich.edu/casl/alum/mom.
