I'm not one
to follow news if
it doesn't involve
war or something
Hollywood related,
but it's hard
not to hear about Terri Schiavo,
who died on March 31 after
numerous legal battles and
fights inside her family.

Something about this seems all
too familiar to me.
Some of you have watched
'Million Dollar Baby,' which
won the Oscar for Best Picture
among other individual awards
at this year's Academy Awards.
The movie depicts a female
boxer rising to fame, only to fall
victim to a paralyzing accident
that left her an invalid below
her neck and unable to care for
herself anymore.

Sorry if this is a bit depressing
or you'd rather hear about
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.
I find it amazing that we refer
to everything in Hollywood as
so fake and just make believe
and then find a film which captures
the fight of an individual
to end her life, whether it be
Terri Schiavo or a portrayal by
Hilary Swank.

Of course both cases aren't
the same. Schiavo had no voice
in her own fate, while Swank's
character pleaded for her life to
end after her glory, rather than
live life as someone who
depended on others to simply
get out of bed.

The similarities
are striking between the two
stories, and as I'm sure CBS is
already planning a Terri
Schiavo made for television
movie, 'Baby' predated the
media attention with Schiavo.
There have been other
instances of a person wishing to
end their life, such as the Jack
Kevorkian drama of the 1990s,
so you can say 'Million Dollar
Baby' was inspired by more
than just from the writer's own
imagination.

While laws were
being rewritten and family
members were fighting with one
another, a Clint Eastwood
movie took the attention and
top prizes in depicting events
that were more real than we
could give Hollywood credit
