Letter to the editor:
Fashion column disappointing, distasteful
Issue date: 11/23/09 Section: OpinioNation
I hope this letter reaches you in good standing.
I am Corey Stokes, a sophomore here at UM-Flint. I am an avid reader of The Michigan Times, so it was a surprise to see something that left a bad taste in my mouth after reading this past issue of The Michigan Times. My concern deals with the section entitled “Fashion forward” by Jenny Serwach. Her topic was on the dress attire of different members of our student body, in particular the “dorm kids” and Student Government members. I, being a writer and an individual dedicated heavily to fashion, would have usually found something as this interesting, but as I was reading the article, I got the feeling of disappointment and shock at some of the things that were mentioned in Serwach’s feature. There’s a huge difference between sharing your knowledge of style and dictating what people should look like. I am not too familiar with how the editing of features at The Michigan Times goes, but I feel like this specific article should not have been published the way it was. If this was an opinion piece, then that should have been stated. But for Serwach to say some of the things she said about her own peers was at the least, distasteful. I have so much more to say, but would rather leave that for a face to face meeting with someone from The Michigan Times, whether it be yourself or Jenny.
I don’t want you to have the impression that I am bashing The Michigan Times, but this is not just the way I feel. Numerous friends of mine and readers of The Michigan Times feel the same way about this article. If what you’re looking for is a fashion writer, be sure that they are able to bring you fashion, less so much of their personal opinion. That’s when readers get turned off.
