The Anthropology Club (Anthro Club) at UM-Flint is starting back up after the graduation of their former president.
Heidi Toler, who had been the vice president, was voted into the presidency by the other members of the club Jan. 20. Angela Passarelli, sophomore history major, will remain the treasurer and Alicia Zarate, sophomore anthropology major, is maintaining the job of secretary. Derik Irelan, senior anthropology major, will work the media side of things.
The club is looking for anyone interested in anthropology, sociology, archeology or political science. The club will be meeting on the first and last Wednesday of each month from 2-3 p.m. in room 257 French Hall.
The club is going to be hosting an event with guest speaker Heidi Phaneuf from the Land Bank, part of the Adopt-a-Lot program. Phaneuf will be speaking about adopting vacant lots and community gardening. The Anthro Club has scheduled Phaneuf to present from 4-5 p.m. Feb. 4 in room 111 French Hall.
The club will also be showing the film, “Mining Madness, Water Wars: The Great Lakes in the Balance.” This will take place sometime after spring break.
The club will be hosting a fundraiser soon for Doctors Without Borders, an organization of doctors and nurses that provide medical care to countries who have undergone a natural disaster or who have been victims of war. Many of the funds will go to help those in Haiti. The fundraiser will be happening sometime in March, according to Toler.
Toler, Passarelli and Zarate attended the American Anthropological Association meeting in Philadelphia and were able to experience a lot.
“We saw a Maya speaker who spoke about archaeological digs in the Mayan world,” Zarate said.
“I met a man from the Netherlands. He gave me his card and said to call him when I was looking for future employment,” Passarelli said.
