With the academic year drawing to a close, positions within the Student Government are opening up to the student body.

The Fall 2010 vacancies include president, vice president, two graduate student senators, 13 undergraduate student senators and one early college senator. Qualifications include good academic standing for senator positions and at least 55 credits for the presidential and vice presidential positions.

The elections will take place April 6 and 7.

Because he is graduating, this will be SG President Owen Agho’s last term as president.

With these requirements in mind, Agho has a vision of what he would like to see in the person who will succeed him.

“I’m hoping to see a person who will continue on in terms of trying to build a relationship between the Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses,” Agho said. “I would also like to see them keeping Student Government functioning in as much of a professional manner as possible.

“These past two years have been a great experience I will take with me as I go on into the things I want to get into,” Agho said.

After graduation, Agho plans on attending law school. With the vacancy in place, current SG Vice President Joe Patterson feels he is up to the challenge to fill the presidential shoes.

“I want to continue building a relationship between Ann Arbor and Dearborn,” Patterson said. “Another thing I want to do is unify the White Building with what goes on in the University Center. There is still a large disjunction between the White Building and this part of campus.

“I also want to get the word out with what Student Government is doing and hopefully get students more politically active,” Patterson said. “With the political climate today, events like the phone-a-thon that Student Government sponsored last fall and the Haitian relief should happen more often.”

Patterson also wants to make the transition between the old constitution and the new one as smooth as possible.

With the introduction of the new constitution, a number of changes have taken place in terms of campaigning and which positions can be elected upon, such as with the positions of secretary and treasurer. The president-elect will appoint these positions. Additionally, students will only be able to vote for senators related to their class standing, and write-in candidates who do not meet the qualifications for the ballot must register with the elections commission before campaigning.

Information for students interesting in running will be available Feb.1-19 in the Office of Student Life. The deadline for students who are interested in running for any of the positions is at 5 p.m. Feb. 19.
