She was nominated for the award by Suzanne Selig, professor and director of the Department of Health Sciences and Administration at UM-Flint. “When I saw the criteria, I didn’t even hesitate,” Selig said. “I said this was written for Shan Parker.”
Parker is an associate professor of health education and is in the second year of her master’s in health education. She also founded the health education honorary Eta Sigma Gamma and is the director of health promotion at the Urban Health and Wellness Center.
She is known for her research in areas that have a direct impact on the community such as health disparities. She also teaches a class on HIV.
“Her work and her programs are vital to Flint because she demonstrates a genuine concern for and knowledge about the people she is working with,” said Mary Black, a masters student and graduate student research assistant in the health department who works with Parker in the Urban Health and Wellness Center.
“She’s able to take the classroom concepts and use them in the community to really take the book knowledge into the real world,” said John Sonnega, assistant professor of health education.
“Without her to guide me and encourage me, I’m not sure that I would have so much enthusiasm for my program and career,” Black said.
Parker could not be reached for comment by press time.
