UM-Flint’s School of Management (SOM) has reached a new agreement with the University of Prishtina in the Republic of Kosovo. The agreement with Kosovo is just one more of the global relationships the SOM has established.

The University of Prishtina is located in the city of Prishtina, the capital of the Republic of Kosovo. The university is home to 10, 000 students and over 730 faculty, 300 staff and has 15 colleges.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities began while professor of finance Seyed Mehdian was presenting at a conference in October 2009 at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi in Romania. He was approached by Professor Myrvete Badivuku from the University of Prishtina about an interest in collaboration.

UM-Flint is one of the first universities to have ties with the Republic of Kosovo since the country’s status of independence is still disputed. Over 65 countries have recognized the Republic of Kosovo as independent but the countries surrounding it have refused to do so.

Mehdian is hopeful about the new agreement saying that “borders will be lifted in the future” and that “young people welcome the idea”.

Mike Mueller, junior human resource management major, believes these agreements are “a great opportunity for students to gain experience for future jobs.”

Some of the other schools in agreement with UM-Flint’s SOM are located in Croatia, Ukraine, Russia, India, China and Taiwan. These agreements with international universities lay the groundwork for collaboration and open the way for an exchange of ideas, students and even faculty.

Yener Kandogan, associate dean of the School of Management, oversees these agreements. He feels these agreements are important because “we are living in a globalized age and it is important for students to feel…exposed to different ways of doing business and different cultures.”

Kandogan said that UM-Flint students gain an edge from these international agreements saying that it leads to students being more attractive in the job market.

Steve DeWitt, freshman accounting major, said that “it’s nice to know that the possibility is there for me to travel to these universities.”

This is great news about the collaboration of these two universities. I only have one correction to make about the countries surrounding Kosova refusing to recognize its independence. (Continued…)
